COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference
31st October - 12th November 2021, Glasgow

COP26 stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’ and this year the UK was acting president. The conference was hosted in Glasgow, where twelve days of talks and negotiations took place between world leaders, negotiators, government bodies and organisations.

The conference aimed to cover four main goals:

1. Secure global net zero by mid-century aiming to keep 1.5 degrees within reach

2. Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats

3. Mobilise finance

4. Work together to deliver

Countries must aim to deliver these targets by phasing out coal, switching to electric vehicles and increasing access to renewable energy. The conference focussed on two key factors; adaption and greater financial investment to drive sustainable development, protect and conserve our ecosystems, homes and livelihoods. A commitment to working together was emphasised to meet the targets and accelerate the pace of change.

Decarbonising the UK economy

The UK has set a target of net zero emissions by 2050, ending its contribution to global warming. Through legislation, government policies and financial investment, the UK strategy aims include the following:

  • Generating clean electricity through offshore wind and onshore renewable technologies

  • Reducing emissions from traditional oil and gas supplies

  • Supporting UK industry to decarbonise by switching to cleaner fuels by encouraging inward investment and increasing energy efficiency through fair carbon pricing

  • Phasing out household traditional gas boilers and investing in low carbon heating systems and heat pump technology

  • Ending the sale of petrol and diesel cars. All cars must be zero emissions capable

  • Funding for electrification of vehicles and EV infrastructure

  • Increasing public transport networks and investment in rapid transit systems

  • Investing in low carbon farming technology and infrastructure including peat and woodland restoration schemes

  • Eliminating biodegradable waste to landfill by 2028 through household waste food collections

  • Supporting early commercial deployment of GGRs (Greenhouse Gas Removals) technologies to balance emissions from the harder to decarbonise sectors such as aviation, agriculture and heavy industry,
